Roget's Thesaurus has gone through many revisions since it was
first published over 150 years ago. But how do those revisions
affect its usefulness for NLP? In this presentation we examine
the differences in content between the 1911 and 1987 versions of
Roget's, and we test both versions - against each other and
against WordNet - on problems such as synonym identification and
word/sentence relatedness. We hope to convince the community that
the public-domain 1911 Roget's Thesaurus helps in many NLP.

"SUMMARIZATION OF SHORT STORIES"

Research in text summarization usually focuses on technical or
journalistic prose. We try to summarize a less-explored genre:
short fiction. Our system creates short story summaries which,
without revealing plot details, are intended to help the user
decide whether she wants to read the complete story. We work with
classical short fiction by such authors as Chekhov, Maupassant,
O.Henry, etc. Fifteen evaluators found our summaries somewhat
useful in deciding whether to read the story, even though the
machine-made summaries are, on several counts, worse than
human-written abstracts.
